‘I could hardly believe my good fortune at being able to call a halt in the day and step from the car into a tranquil world. Within seconds, I was out in the beauty of Yorkshire, wandering along in the sunshine and clean air with my two companions trotting ahead of me. Lucky dogs, I often thought, and lucky, lucky me’

S says James Herriot in his marvelous introduction to this collection of dog stories taken from the seven books about his life as a vet in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. He writes about every sort of animal in his books from cattle and the majestic Shires horses on the farms to the dogs, cats and canaries in the home. But he admits that he has a very special place for dogs; in fact he even dedicated ‘Vets Might Fly’ to two of his dogs, Hector and Dan.

This handsome book is a collection of all the stories about dogs which appeared in his famous books – from Tricki Woo the Pekinese with a flop-bott problem to Jake the lurcher who is pushed around in a pram by his nomadic owner. All are delightfully illustrated by Victor Ambrus.

In addition to his long introduction, James Herriot has written a note to accompany each story which will expand on some pertinent point within it – perhaps saying what happened later to the dog and it owner, on explaining some medical point, or describing something similar which happened recently. This therefore, is a James Herriot book to please his millions of fans around the world.
